White Water in Sjoa- Norway
Norway is a country I can return time after time. Lucky for me it is a summer destination where my other half works, giving me a good reason to jet out and holiday in this amazingly beautiful place.
Not only do Norwegians have the best work leisure lifestyle but it is a white water mecca! This summer I headed to the Valley of Sjoa where Gene 17 a white water coaching company run their white water road trips.
We would spend the week cruising around the picture perfect countryside, eat some great food and enjoy new river after new river. Having done little white water since my trip to Mexico, I knew that Norway was going to be a beast of a step up. It would be important for me to take my top game with me. Having just returned from Tanzania after leading 28 students for a month I was pretty knackered already and this holiday was going to be yet another action packed week
Norway is a destination where you will find high volume rivers which be can both technical and steep.
One of the best bits of the trip was the fact that there were other girls out there running the amazing white water. Its great to get an opportunity to watch these girls paddle, they certainly inspire me. I think it takes a lot of strength and some real grit and determination to be a white water girl out here. A few times I've jumped on to a river and instantly felt like it had control over my tiny boat and from than moment it would always be a fight to reach the get out.
This trip however nervous I felt before getting on the river, I felt in control and was charging my boat getting it where I wanted i to go.
I was totally stoked. There were huge rapids which would never have been looked at before let alone considered to run them. Watching the girls styling rapids filled me with confidence and encouraged me to give it a go. Rapids became to look possible and I began to feel confident in my ability to run them.
More and more often I feel that seeing other women doing what I inspire to do is what motivates me to keep trying and push myself harder. This is a week I look back on with pride. Never have I paddled rivers that intimidated my so much, yet would get off the water each day stoked at what had been achieved.
The Gene 17 coaches were amazing and their expertise and knowledge of each river filled me with confidence and I improved more in one week than I had in the last couple of years. I recommend their trips and courses to all wanting to improve their paddling.
