The ever growing Ladies Sea Kayaking Symposium is a gathering where women from all over the country have a chance to mingle and learn. Ladies traveled as far as Inverness and Cornwall. All abilities were catered for and there were ace coaches delivering sessions on the sea, river and lake.
Palm and Pyranha where both there with vans loaded with gear and boats to try out. Its no surprise that the sparkly sea kayaks and matching colour schemes of the new palm gear were of great interest. This event took some organising, and the centre near Bala lake was a stunning location. Good work Fran!
The atmosphere was electric all weekend. I was excited to introduce the wonders of sea kayaking to several budding kayakers. Their enthusiasm was contagious and we giggled, gossiped and skillfully manoeuvred our boats around the breezy lake. My gals were a pleasure to coach. We shared the lake with the Stand Up paddle crew who cruised around in style. It was a great venue to try out this up and coming paddle sport, whilst the Tryweryn and Dee hosted the white water chicks.
Great chat was had over dinner, discussing super moves, solid rolls and spectacular swims. Followed by a warm welcome to guest speaker Erin Bastian (that's me) and the talk went down well. Nerves disappeared as soon as I started to chat way about my recent adventure. It turns out my mum was right, I am an expert on this trip as I am one of three who were there living the adventure. Therefore I could happily chat away and share my journey with others.
Sunday provided us with glorious 50mph gusty winds and driving rain, but this did not dampen the spirits of my keen group. We poked our noses out into the choppy waters beyond the sheltered pontoon. Once we had built up the courage we made a run for the sheltered river mouth down wind. Huge grins and high fives were exchanged after taking on the wild gusty wind and tricky lake waves and our day was not going to be stopped by this 'Patagonia' worthy weather.
"As a coach I was so proud of how my ladies picked up this new discipline and I loved their enthusiasm."
If you feel like this kind of event could help your paddling, or you would just love a weekend on the water with the girls then later on in this summer the Ladies Sea kayaking Festival will be running in Devon. Come along!
I will be there, enjoying the stunning coastline and coaching.
Outdoor Girl and Adventurer. Enjoy stories from her coaching, talking and exploring.
